Recognizing the clinical value of the Seldinger percutaneous entry technique that led to dramatic reductions in historic open surgical procedures, Cook Incorporated became the first U.S. manufacturer to produce the matched sets of needles, catheters and wire guides needed to perform this procedure. That foresight put Cook Incorporated at the start of a medical technology revolution which has led to international success. The company, started in a spare bedroom in 1963, is now acknowledged as a leading developer and manufacturer of catheters, wire guides, introducer sheaths, stents, embolization coils, vena cava filters, aortic endovascular grafts, airway management devices, central venous catheter devices, drainage products and other technologies in the area of minimally invasive therapy. Cook Incorporated is also on the forefront of developing next generation technologies that advance combination drug/device and biologic/device design concepts.

Global sales and marketing efforts are orchestrated through four strategic business units (SBUs). Diagnostic and Interventional focuses on the area of interventional radiology, interventional cardiology and interventional vascular surgery. Critical Care addresses clinical needs in emergency and critical care medicine, anesthesiology and other related specialties. Endovascular Therapy places an emphasis on device technology for endovascular treatment of abdominal and thoracic aortic aneurysm disease. Surgical concentrates on the use of biomaterials for general and plastic surgical applications.
