The healthcare industry generates a lot of waste, all of which impacts our world economically, socially, and environmentally. The Sustainability Roadmap for Hospitals helps us understand the different types of waste in the industry and reduce waste through prevention, reduction, and recycling.
One of the ways that we can use the Roadmap is to employ performance improvement measures (PIMs). PIMs cover topics such as how to manage energy, water, waste, and the supply chain. There are several waste management strategies that anyone in the healthcare industry can implement.
These are some of the helpful waste management PIMs that are provided in the Roadmap:
- Establish a baseline for waste generation and track performance.
- Conduct a waste assessment.
- Develop and/or enhance the facility’s recycling program.
- Coordinate integrated waste contracts.
Reducing waste is good for a company’s bottom line and good for the environment. The PIMs that we’ve highlighted are only a small sample of all of the resources on the Roadmap’s site. We encourage you to explore the site to get additional ideas about what you can do.
