In 2010, a diagnosis of testicular cancer interrupted Austin Detra’s college swimming career and his studies at Mesa State University in Colorado. Part of his treatment included the use of a Cook implantable port. After this experience, Austin had to reset his life and move on. We had a chance to catch up with him recently through his sister, Holly Detra, a graphic designer in our marketing department.
“My brother is one of the strongest people I’ve ever known,” Holly stated about her brother, Austin.
She shares the news that her brother Austin has now graduated college and continues to pursue his life goals as aggressively and optimistically as he battled cancer. After completing cancer treatment, Austin transferred to a college in his home state of Florida. He averaged 20 credit hours a semester, completing his prerequisites for physical therapy school as originally planned, and added a degree in psychology. Austin maintained his interest in swimming from his days at Mesa State, though. He said, “After graduating, I was hired as an assistant coach for my old [swim] club team, the Sarasota YMCA Sharks. I am really enjoying coaching and plan on applying to physical therapy schools this fall.” The support his family and friends provided him during his treatment and recovery is vivid in his memory. He continues to draw on the entire experience.
“My journey…has given me confidence in achieving other goals and overcoming obstacles. I share my experience freely, hopefully to help, support, and encourage others who are facing challenges,” said Austin, who has been cancer free for four years.
