Cook Medical launches new Instinct Plus® Endoscopic Clipping Device with improved functionality and expanded indications

Bloomington, Ind. — Cook Medical’s Instinct Plus® Endoscopic Clipping Device is now commercially available to physicians in the United States. The new clipping device, based on the design of the original Instinct® Endoscopic Clip, features smoother operation and responsive handling1, strong clip retention2 and expanded indications beyond hemostasis and endoscopic marking, including compatibility through a side-viewing scope (also known as a duodenoscope), applications for defect closure, anchoring procedures and prophylactic clipping in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract.

Bleeding in the upper GI tract is a leading cause of death in patients suffering from gastrointestinal disorders, and upper GI peptic ulcer bleeding is associated with up to 20,000 deaths per year in the United States alone.3 Clipping devices are used to close defects within the GI tract and to achieve hemostasis in a variety of endoscopic procedures, including bleeding associated with mucosal and submucosal defects, polyp resection and diverticulosis of the colon. When physicians are treating GI peptic ulcer bleeding, hemoclips are usually more effective at preventing rebleeding than injection therapy.4

“Clips are used in a wide variety of endoscopic procedures, but primarily for closure and hemostasis. Wherever the clips are placed, they’re an important tool for the physician and for their patients,” said Barry Slowey, president of Cook Winston-Salem and vice president of Cook Medical’s Endoscopy specialty. “Instinct Plus builds on the strengths of the original Instinct device. We’re very excited to offer physicians a tool that will provide them with more options for treating patients.”

Other features of the Instinct Plus clip include multiple anchoring tips on the clip to aid in dragging and holding tissue and an adjustable clipping span that opens up to 16 millimeters wide.

Instinct Plus is the newest addition to Cook Medical Endoscopy’s hemostasis portfolio, which includes Hemospray® Endoscopic Hemostat, the Saeed® Six Shooter® Multi-Band Ligator and the AcuJect® Variable Injection Needle.
